For Mac, the App Store will automatically update your software and keep you informed of any updates or changes. As an example, when using Google Calendar, the App will check for updates and will notify you if there are any available.
There is no need to visit the App Store and download the App from there.
Downloading via the web link to the App Store is a handy way to not only update your App but also to download any additional Apps that might be needed.
If you are not sure if there are any updates to your App, you can check on your Mac by opening your Menu Bar and clicking on the App Store icon at the top of the Menu Bar.
