The effects of chronic morphine and diazepam, alone and in combination, on the spontaneous locomotor activity, shock-escape test (a test of defensive responses to the cat) and somatoparaphrenia (the delusional perception that parts of the body belong to another body) were studied in rats. The effects of these drugs were also determined in the rats after intracranial administration of the serotonin neurotoxin 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT). The results showed that chronic morphine had no effect on somatoparaphrenia, reduced the locomotor activity in rats, but did not influence the shock-escape behavior in cats. In contrast, chronic diazepam increased locomotor activity in rats and increased their cat shock-escape behavior, but had no influence on somatoparaphrenia. Chronic administration of both drugs induced a more pronounced change in the locomotor activity than either drug alone. Intracranial administration of 5,7-DHT to rats increased their locomotor activity, but had no effect on cat shock-escape behavior and somatoparaphrenia.
