Chapter 1
Two souls met. Though they had a lifetime of experience between them, those two souls had never met, and one of them was going to live and the other was going to die.
The winds blew fiercely, dashing the snow all around, and two women were playing a chess match. The pieces were well placed and the board was perfectly balanced. Each player commanded strong and powerful moves, but neither could be more effective than the other. The moment of victory hung in the balance.
The red queen was desperately trying to win. The white king would not give up.
The red queen played her last move. Her king was under attack. The white king moved its pawn to meet her threat.
The red queen played its last move, giving up its queen and losing the game. The white king moved its piece and captured the red queen's queen, winning the game and putting its opponent in checkmate.
The two women looked at each other, waiting for the checkmate to be delivered. But the red queen's soul was going to win. It would take two pieces and an army to defeat it.
The white king moved and captured the last red queen. It had no hope. There were no pieces left to capture and the game was over. The red queen's soul began to laugh. The white king turned and ran away.
Chapter 2
A young woman stood in front of a mirror. She was not looking at her reflection, but at the other woman she could see in the mirror.
Her name was Tiana, and she was not very good at knowing how she looked. In fact, most people agreed she didn't look that great at all. People could see the hard work it took for her to look like that.
She was tall and thin, with an even more prominent nose than most. Her lips were thin, but her eyes were almost always closed. People had to look hard to even see the faint outline of a face in her dull brown eyes.
Tiana was standing in front of the mirror because she wanted a particular beauty mark. If she looked down at her reflection she would see that she didn't have it.
She stood in front of the mirror in her room and waited for her father to arrive. He was late. He was supposed to come over after he finished work and meet her and her sister, Talia.
